Ev training

Im very, very new to this board, so if this topic is in the wrong location my bad.

I participated in the Pax East 2013 Pokemon League and made it out with 5 badges. One gym leader(cant remember names, sorry) suggested that i come here and learn about EV training. Can anyone help out with a break down of how it works. Thanks in advance

In short, all pokemon have a range of what a particular stat can be at a given level (usually measured at level 100 or 50). This is calculated when the game does some magic math with your stats. Basically any pokemon can have 510 evs but only a maximum of 255 can go into any one stat. Since To put evs into a certain stat, consult the table at the bottom of the link. The table shows the best places to ev train for a particular stat and how much they give you per mindless slaughter. Butchering 255 individual pokemon seems like a lot. This is reduced with the introduction of certain ev boosting properties such as a brace item or the pokerus. Using the pokerus, pharmaceuticals, and a power item will reduce the total number you need to kill to 15.

Once you understand the basics, I also recommend searching for "[your pokemon]+Smogon" on google and looking at the suggested EVs for whatever is closest to the moveset/nature that you currently use. It can be helpful in learning about different strategies you may not have considered for your favorite Pokemon. Just don't take that site too seriously!

If you are going to EV train, I highly suggest getting a Volcarona with fly and the ability flame body. That way you are killing two birds with one stone. (If you did not know, flame body reduces the required number of steps to hack an egg by half.)

I just want to thank everyone for their input and advice. I finally got the hang of eV training in black 2 and then xy introduced super training which made things easier (still used traditional way for a while).
I'm currently getting my team prepared for East 2014. See everyone there!
