I was just thinking to myself about starter pokemon and started wondering which of the other Pokemon would make good starters. So I raise the question to you, PAX League contenders: If you could pick your starter from a larger pool than just the three you're normally given, who'd you pick? They can be of any type, not just fire, grass or water and would have to have the 3 evolution forms that all starters do (Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard).
I think I'd choose a male Nidoran, myself. I always liked those little guys and poison is such an under appreciated type.

Easy answer: Eevee. You have 7-types available for evolving purposes, whichever your preference may be. Plus, adorable!
Harder answer: A dragon type, preferably one you can evolve by leveling (no Kingdra...). Bagon or Dratini are the ones I had in mind.

A Smeargle would make for a very interesting game.

I would pick a Nincada. When it evolves, you get two pokemon instead of just one.

Gastly is lots of fun, as are dragon types like dratini. And my favorite little cup contenders are joltik and starly.
But I think the best pokemon to make a starter has got to be swinub. Interesting typing, goes from cute to dumb looking to badass, really powerful if raised with care, capable of carrying a trainer if necessary.
Rhyhorn, zubat, and solosis also seem like good options.

I think Magikarp would be an interesting pokemon to start with.

You WILL learn the meaning of hard work and dedication for your pokemon. None of that bulbasaur easy setting for the first two gyms bullshit. And riiiiiight about the time you get to Vermillion city, home of Lt. Surge, He evolves into Glorious Gyarados, who is a flying/water type.
assuming we're doing this start in gen 1 area.
