Occupy Wallstreet

Anyone else keeping up with the happenings at Wall Street? I've been watching non-stop on the news and whatnot about it, and I'm starting to consider heading up there for a few days. It'd be nifty to run into PPL people there :D Any thoughts on the event?

I think their heart's in the right place, but they're missing something I can't put my finger on.....

Honestly, if I was closer by, I would go to it, but, wrong coast etc.

What are they missing? Actual pressure. A protest is great for raising awareness about an issue, but unless you're going to take actual steps to enact change it's not going to happen. I don't think Americans have it in them to change the system in the ways that the good people over at Occupy Wall Street intend. Personally I wish we did. There's a lot of us out there struggling to get by and I think it's criminal that trickle down economics have been in place for so long. Who thought this was a good idea again?

..My 2 cents:

The average American really has no true concept of what their currency is worth.

For example, gold is at what, 1800ish an ounce atm, right? Big number. Well, if you figure in the devalument of the US dollar, and compare that all to when gold standard was still used and if it was applied to the same system, gold is at 1/5th(ish) of what it was back when gold standard was used.

The numbers get bigger, which instills fear and anxiety due to a lack of understanding of economic trends in our own country, and with no system to relate to, aside from other world governments currency systems, they are just numbers, and will always seem big, and increasingly so as each generation gets older.

in a decade I have seen a 39 cent candy bar go up to an average of 98 cents. Nothing about them has changed(if it's a mars product), only the value of the dollar has, and more often than not, minimum wages adjust to this as a means of attempting to get everyone to relax a bit by a seemingly "increased" wage.

Yes america isn't a democracy at the moment...hell it never was since the founding due to the size of the population, it's been a representative democracy, but at the moment it is leaning towards a capalatistic system. Which isn't bad, but we are in a weird mid ground that is very bad to all parties.

Right now we, on average, aren't using the money that is made, due to anxiety or fear, and thus companies don't get the revneu they need to pay employees, thus jobs go away. After that unemployment goes up and people freak out more and the cycle perpetuates its self.

All in all it really comes down to that fact that america needs to figure out what form of government it is going to truly adhere to, and people need to be more educated as far as economics, and in general honestly, is concerned.

Also: Socialist health care, in canada, was labeled a "crime against humanity" in 2009 by the UN due to the exceedingly long wait due to the system in place. People died before they even figured out what was wrong, and they now have "Super hospitals" in place that are EXACTLY what American hospitals are.

We don't need Free medical for all. In fact, it would due to our population size and extreme lack of nurses int eh field, likely destroy our country's population.

I'm sure I am forgetting one other thing somewhere in there. But oh well.

Note: I am economically lower middle class.

Pretty much.

Demands aren't bad, excluding the free health care thing. But needs a system and sllightly more orginization.
