Re: East 2013 - Theme/Story Suggestion Time

Here's where you can suggest things for the PPL to do!

I've been talking with a few friends about a theme, so I wanted to submit this as well for people to have a gander at:

Legendary Pokemon could make for a great theme! A Pokemon Researcher (Propriety?) is interested in gathering information on Legendary Pokemon, and wants the challengers to help. We break the Legendary Pokemon down into three groups: The Elemental Legendaries, The Space-Time Legendaries, and the World Origin Legionaries. Each of the challengers has to go on a quest to discover some key information about the legendary pokemon (maybe a word scramble where each card has a letter on it, and they have to collect all the letters and make a word or something similar to get them interacting with other challengers), with the goal of using this information to try to capture one of the legendary pokemon (maybe we could have some Legendary pokemon Plushies from the Nintendo Store in New York as props for the Champion Photo Op/prizes if we can afford them, but probably not because they're pretty expensive.)

We could incorporate an Elite Six (two from each category; they don't have to be exact matches, just rough sorts of associations) and depending on what category you're in, you have to fight Four members: the two from your category and one from each of the other categories. The biggest reason for a larger E4- team is that East gets SLAMMED with people who want to play PPL. It would be to our advantage to offer up a larger Elite team.

If we want to incorporate the PAX Prime Plot, or the criminal organizations in some way, since the end goal is to capture one of the legendary, we could have the challengers find out that the champion is actually one of the crime bosses, who swoops in and captures the Legendary Pokemon before they can, and then the challenger has to battle them to get it back (Champion team could have that legendary on it).

It's nice because Legendary Pokemon are a big theme in the games, and everyone is familiar with them, but it doesn't require our gym leaders (or our Elite members, really) to have a specific theme.

there could also be something along the lines of what (will) happen at prime, but with legendaries instead, and each faction representing either a region or some sort of overarching similarity between the legendaries, each faction being led by an elite (X) member whose team is based around the idea (hoenn legend would have raqyuaza or some sort)

tl;dr-this year's prime crossed with legendary pokemon.

Let's try and keep on-topic here, please. :)
If we start straying into more off-topic discussion, then I will assume everyone has said their piece on themes and they will move on to Admin discussion.

We do a lot with Pokemon's organized crime syndicates. What if we work with one of the other big special events in Pokemon - the Rare Captures?

What if a Ruins of Alph -esque mystery has players hunting down clues and working with Gym Leaders to find the secrets hidden beneath PAX Pokemon League? What if the Elite Four is hiding a sinister secret project that players uncover over the course of their time with the League?

Instead of having a generic 'Champion' to battle, what if there is Pokemon-based challenge ala Mewtwo at the end of RBY? The Elite Four help you find the final challenge, and it is up to you to take it up and ultimately win the League. It would really make the player feel special to make it to that final point, just like the big climaxes of the games themselves.

We've had several really good ideas proposed!
Those of you really passionate about your ideas - I'm challenging you!
How would you apply the "rival cards"/difficulty-tier cards to your idea? What would challengers be required to do, and what prize would you suggest for them?

Remember, last East had players running around to complete their rivals cards, which won them a special rival badge! We want this trend of "players playing against players" to continue!

I'll start things off then.

For cards/difficulty tier we'd have a mingling of the recruitment cards and the rival cards. The fronts would contain the 8-10 leaders in whichever tier was designated, and the backs would have the five team emblems (as well as our misc. info about meetup times, QR code, and a quick 'who we are' spiel). As these cards are awarded to the challenger, they pick a team designation that the leader awarding said card would mark on that card. As that challenger continues along their journal earning badges, they might come across another challenger who had a different chosen designation on their card. Their eyes meet, and battle commences. A leader would observe/recognize the match was held and check off each card for the opposing team they fought (so if they had joined team Green, and fought a team Blue member, both the Green designation and the Blue designation would be checked off in some manner). If they should manage to mark off each team, they would be awarded another badge by the observing leader (the team Spirit badge, or somesuch). This would count towards either their 8 to challenge the E5 or as an E5 badge (either or, not both), to show how committed they were to their team's dominance.

I love the idea of a community badge that counts to the main eight - that sounds super snazzy!

More on this final showdown Champion idea - what if part of the mystery is finding where and when the champion is taking challenges? Like finding Red on Mt. Silver. As the answer is crowd-sourced it adds this level of community reward. Even if people can't take the final challenge, they can help others in finding the answer.

Well, i come back after a few days and there's even more fun to be had!

Sandstorms, for the record, i meant you :P

Anyway, logistics. A lot of this was posed in the prime thread (and to be honest i can't take complete credit for the idea, just remembering it and bringing it back up) but we'd have the normal trainer cards with however that worked with the rival system however instead of having trainers battle each other for a rival badge they'd have to fight a hunter to reclaim a pokemon. I don't necessarily think it should be a battle, because that will already be happening with the normal league, but perhaps the trainer will have to call out the hunter and engage in some sort of dialogue or rhetoric or activity (i don't know to be honest, that's probably a flaw with the whole idea) with them. If we remain on bw, perhaps entralinking and playing a game of in game tag, however when BW2 hit the shores this October, there might be something fun in there that could happen instead. On the battling side, they could still function as leaders (we'd have to keep gameshark far away from this so things don't get stalled) and just have the challengers defeat them and reclaim a certain number of pokemon from them to get the extra badge.

RANGERS.

DERP.

there's my plot device....the good guys for the league would be the rangers obviously, and in addition to them being leaders they could also do tag battles against the hunters either with a ranger present and tagging with another challenger, or with the ranger themself (there might have to be one dedicated ranger to keep things from getting too backed up judging from the queues i had to slog through at east 2012) and challengers would receive their extra badge for their assistance in taking on the rangers (along the same idea of the rival badge from last year)

Perhaps at the appointed meetup times, the hunters would be stationed throughout the center, like one down by the tabletops, two chilling out in the skyways, etc, and the trainer, if they accept the challenge, would have to leave the handheld lounge to go find their target and battle them. Then, if they win, the hunter trades them the pokemon and they go back and check it with the leader who gave them the challenge, like i said before.

More ideas: Each hunter could specialise in a stage 1 form of a pseudo-legendary. One hunter had deinos, another beldum, a third bagon, etc. They'd have a box of whichever pokemon they specialize in, and like I said before, I'd be willing to breed up competition quality mons to add a little incentive to the game for the more serious players out there.

2 hunters for each skill level, so even the kids would have a shot, and maybe if you defeat the Hunters' leader, you would win a badge that could be used in place of an e4 symbol like the Rival badge worked this year."

this ^ would also help to keep queues from maybe getting too long, or at least help to pass the time.

so yeah, there's some logistical ideas.

sorry for the massive wall of text ^_^"

(I'll also BE at east this year again, finances permitting, so if this does go through i would love to participate somehow)

By pseudo-legendary, I'm presuming you just mean OU-teired pokemon. I consider psuedo/fake legendarys to be things like Manaphy and Lucario

I won't be at East (I live on the West coast) but one idea I have it for the theme to be different aspects of the Pokemon games, which would be Catching, Training, Breeding, Fighting, Trading, and Stratagizing. Each of the E6 specializes in one of these, and their battle has a special clause to it (IE. for Catching, the E6 member and the challenger must go to rout XXX and catch a Pokemon there, then have a 1v1 battle with it)
